What is the difference between e-commerce and agentic commerce?

In e-commerce a human clicks a product and pays in a checkout. In agentic commerce the human delegates the purchase to an AI agent (e.g. ChatGPT, Perplexity or an enterprise procurement agent), which autonomously searches, compares and checks out — often without the user ever seeing the seller's website.

Is agentic commerce operational, or still a future story?

Operational. OpenAI's Agentic Commerce Protocol, Stripe Agent Toolkit, Visa Intelligent Commerce and Mastercard Agent Pay launched in 2025. ChatGPT checkout is live in the US with merchants such as Etsy and Shopify stores. The first European pilots are running now.

What should my organisation do within 90 days?
